Report from Crossland’s conference

Dave Crossland providing end notes in the workshop

I’ve compiled the photos, video and I’ve written a short report on the conference and workshop held by Dave Crossland at the University of Aveiro. Although it’s in Portuguese I think you get the gist of it by translating it with an online service.

Read it here: http://pedamado.wordpress.com/2012/02/09/conferencia-e-workshop-de-dave-crossland-ua/

(If anyone is willing to translate this, I’ll happily post a link or the text here)

Typography Conference @ Portugal

Detail from the conference website

We are preparing the second edition of the National Conference on Typography at the Communication and Art Department at the University of Aveiro. It will be a one-day event on September 30, 2011.

As with the first edition, the main purpose of the conference is to gather Portuguese researchers, developers and designers in order to present and exchange ideas around Typography[1].

Its main participants will be the researchers, students and higher education teachers as well as professionals from different media backgrounds, ranging from traditional print media to digital publishing and computer interaction.

Under this year’s “investigation and development contexts” theme, we’ve opened a call for papers and posters that will result in a proceedings e-book, with an ISBN.

The call is open only for Portuguese written papers/posters. So, if you do speak portuguese, and are willing to present a paper or poster, don’t miss this opportunity. The call is only open until June 30, so check the call, the dates and the submission instructions pages on the conference website.

Nevertheless, if you’re nearby next September, please register and drop in—we’re in the process of inviting international keynote speakers, so I think it will be worth attending even if you don’t speak Portuguese!… Bookmark the conference website for registration instructions, and conference updates!

We are also looking for sponsors. The conference itself won’t generate any profit, so we’re trying to get funding in order to support the logistic costs (cofee breaks, gift bags, travel expenses, etc…). If you’re interested in supporting us, or know someone that might be interested, please contact us.

If you are in Portugal in the next week, make sure to drop by Aveiro—the Type Designer Dino dos Santos will be presenting a conference on Typography and Type Design at the University of Aveiro. This is a rather rare opportunity to hear a Portuguese Type Designer speaking in public about his projects (at least I hope he will do so). Here is the invitation issued by the class teacher Olinda Martins, roughly translated:

We’re counting with your presence and participation in this unique event!

For those who don’t know it, or are traveling from abroad, the DEGEI is the building nº 10 on the Campus Map. Drop by and have a word with us ;)
